As winter settles in and the holiday spirit begins to twinkle, there's no better time to pick up your crochet hook and create something special like my snowflake granny square crochet pattern. Perfect for intermediate and advanced crocheters alike.
Yarn Choice: Opt for worsted acrylic weight for the yarn or any other worsted weight yarn.
Hook Size: Use the recommended hook size for your yarn to achieve the right tension and gauge. This will help your coaster lay flat and maintain its shape. Stitch
Tension: Keep your tension consistent throughout the project. If your stitches are too tight or too loose, it can affect the overall appearance of the snowflake granny square.
Blocking: After finishing your snowflake granny square, consider blocking it to help it lay flat and enhance the final shape. This step is especially helpful for intricate designs like snowflakes.
Instructions
For this crochet snowflake granny square pattern, we will be working in rounds.
Round 1: With the white yarn make a mr and ch x2 in it (does not count as a stitch). Then dc x12 into the mr and sl st to the first dc in the round (12).
Round 2: Ch x2 and dc inc in every stitch. Then sl st to the first dc in the round (24).Make sure you have exactly 24 stitches.
Round 3: In flo, make a *Sc, hdc, and then in the next stitch (dc + ch x4 +dc). In the following stitch make a hdc*.
Repeat this sequence for the rest of the round.
The last stitch you need to make for this round is a hdc, then sl st to the first sc in the round.
Round 4: Sc in the first 2 stitches. *Then in the chain space from round 3, make a sc and ch x6. Next, make a sl st in the first ch that you made after the sc (like a picot stitch).
Now you are going to crochet back in the chain space from round 3, by making a hdc and than a dc.
Next ch x6 and in the 5th chain from the hook, make a sl st.
After, ch x5 and in the 5th chain from the hook, make a sl st. Do this last step 1 more time.
Finally, slip stitch into the first chain you made in the initial chain of 6 (after the dc). You should now have 3 loops at the top of the dc you made previously.
Make a dc and a hdc in the chain space from the last round. You are now working down the other side of the snowflake spike.
Then ch x6 and make a sl st in the 6th ch (the one made after the hdc.)
Next, make 1 more sc in the chain space, then sc in the next 5 stitches before you get to the next ch space from round 3.*
*Repeat for the rest of the round. After the last snowflake spike, sc in the next 3 stitches and then fasten off and weave in any ends.
Granny Square:
Round 1: Flip the snowflake over and using either the light blue or delft, join the yarn into the back loops of the 3rd round, preferably near the start and end of the third round.
Ch x2, dc inc, dc for the entire round (36). Then sl st to the 1st dc in the round.
Round 2: Ch x2, dc inc + ch + dc inc in the following stitch. This is the first corner.
Make a hdc in the next 2 stitches, then a sc in the next 4 stitches, follow that with hdc stitches in the next 2 stitches and then finally make the corner stitch again (dc inc, ch x1, dc inc). The only place where you'll have multiple stitches is in the corner.
Now repeat the above 3 more times. After the last hdc in the round, sl st to the first dc of the round. (48 stitches with 4 chain spaces)
Round 3: Ch x2, then dc in the next stitch. When you get to the chain space in the corner make a dc inc + ch x2 + dc inc. Then dc the side of the square (12 per side without the corners). Repeat 3 more times for the rest of the round.
Once you make the last dc in the round, sl st to the first dc.
Round 4-6: Repeat round 3 by creating a dc in every stitch and a dc inc + ch x2 + dc inc for the corners. When you get done with round 6, fasten off the yarn and weave in any ends.
After your snowflake and granny square are completed, tack down the ends of the snowflake to the granny square so it lays flat.
And there you have it—your beautiful crochet snowflake granny square is all finished!
