🍵Instructions for Crochet Christmas Potholder Pattern
For this Crochet Christmas Potholder Pattern, we will be working in the round.
How to Crochet Potholders for Beginners:
Round 1: With sage, ch x27
Round 2: In the second chain from the hook make an increase (2). Then sc x24. Sc x3 in the last stitch and the flip to the opposite side of the chain. Then sc x25 and sl st to the last stitch worked.
Round 3-27: Work a sc in every stitch.
Then, crochet the opening closed with sc stitches. When you get to the end of the row make a stacked sc stitch on top of the last stitch.
To make a stacked sc you go to the farthest leg of the last stitch and go through it, yarn over, pull up a loop, and then yarn over and go through the 2 loops on your hook.
Now do the above steps again but in the sc you just made. You are moving up a little at a time by doing this. Make 10 stacked sc stitches and then sl st back to the last stitch you worked on the square potholder.
You now have a loop for your potholder to hang from.
Crochet Present Potholder:
Once your green base is complete, switch to the red yarn and make a chain of 25. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew this chain horizontally across the middle of the crochet square.
Next, crochet a chain of 50 in red, fasten off, and sew it vertically across the center of the square. The first 25 chains should be sewn flat to the square, with the remaining 25 chains left to dangle from the top.
After attaching the first half of the chain, take the opposite end and sew it to the top of the vertically sewn red chain, creating a loop. Pinch the loop in half and sew the folded portion to the same spot, forming a bow at the top.
Your crochet present potholder is now complete!

🐌Expert Tips
- Use Yarn with Good Texture: Choose a yarn that is durable and easy to work with, like cotton yarn, which is perfect for potholders because it's heat-resistant and absorbent. It also holds its shape well and gives your potholders a nice, crisp finish.
- Check Your Tension: Crochet too tightly, and your potholder might turn out smaller or too stiff; crochet too loosely, and it might not be as durable. Aim for a medium tension so your potholder has the right balance of flexibility and sturdiness.
- Weave in Ends Neatly: When you change colors or finish a round, be sure to weave in your ends securely. This will keep your potholder looking neat and prevent any stray threads from popping out as you use them.
🧵Pattern FAQs
For potholders, it’s important to use a yarn that is both durable and heat-resistant. Cotton yarn is the best choice because it’s absorbent, sturdy, and holds its shape well. Avoid acrylic yarn for potholders, as it can melt under high heat.
The key is to maintain consistent tension. If your stitches are too tight, your potholder might turn out small and stiff; if they’re too loose, it might not be as sturdy. Aim for a medium tension for flexibility and durability.
Absolutely! The base pattern is versatile, and you can use it for any occasion or theme. You could make simple solid-colored potholders, striped ones, or even use the same pattern for everyday kitchen accessories. The possibilities are endless!
