The Crochet Seed Stitch Pattern is a lightly textured stitch that is bumpy and reminds people of scattered seeds. This stitch is perfect for blankets, scarves, and dishcloths.

    Finished crochet seed stitch block.

The seed stitch is one of my go-to stitches. I love the texture and have created quite a few patterns with it, such as my Crochet Grit Stitch Baby Blanket.

Whether it's called the seed stitch, grit stitch, or lemon peel stitch, it is all the same stitch.

However, the seed stitch is often confused with the crochet moss stitch or granite stitch because many believe those stitches resemble seeds more. While this may be visually true, please note that these are not the same stitches.

Thatโ€™s why I specifically have the seed stitch singled out from my other lemon peel/grit stitch designs, as they are not commonly confused with other stitches like the seed stitch is.

    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. Stitch Construction: The seed stitch is created using a combination of single crochet and double crochet stitches. There are no variations to this stitch, except for making it in the round. Using a different combination of alternating stitches results in a different stitch. If you do the seed stitch but switch the color every row, you are basically making the crochet houndstooth pattern.
    2. Swatch Adjustment: When making a stitch swatch, you may need to adjust the chain length if you want to make your project wider.
    3. Finished Size: The finished size is roughly 10 inches by 10 inches.

    ๐Ÿชก Materials Needed

    • 1 ball of scrap yarn or yarn you prefer using.
    • H hook (5mm)
    • Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends

    ๐Ÿ’ญAbbreviations to Remember (US terms)

    • Single crochet (sc)
    • Chains (ch)
    • Double crochet (dc)

๐ŸตInstructions for the Crochet Seed Stitch Pattern

We will be making the crochet stitch pattern in rows not rounds.

    Finished crochet chain.

Ch x31. If you need to adjust the chain make sure it is in a multiple of 2 + 1.

    Single crochet into the chain.

Row 1: Starting in the second chain from the hook make a sc.

Then double crochet into the chain.

Then a dc in the next stitch.

The seed stitch is made alternating sc and dc stitches. So repeat the process of alternating sc, dc for the rest of the row. Ch x1 and turn. The ch is a turning ch so do not work in it. Skip over it in the next row and go directly to the last stitch worked (30).

    Finished first row.

Row 2-24: If your last stitch in the last row was a dc (which it should have been) start off with a sc, then dc and alternate sc and dc stitches for the row. Remember to ch +1 for turning after each row (30).

When all the rows are complete, fasten off and weave in the tail.

    Finished crochet seed stitch block.

And now you know how to make the crochet seed stitch! Happy crocheting!

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Yarn Variety: You can make the seed stitch with any yarn weightโ€”DK, aran, chunky, etc. Each will produce a nice bumpy texture.
    • Color Play: Experiment with different colors of yarn to create unique patterns and effects in your projects.
    • Tension Consistency: Maintaining consistent tension is essential for achieving an even texture. Practice your tension on a swatch before starting your main project.
    • Finishing Techniques: Consider adding a border or edging to your finished piece to enhance its appearance and prevent fraying.

    ๐ŸงตPattern FAQs

What is the difference between the moss stitch and the seed stitch?

Both stitches alternate patterns, but the seed stitch alternates between sc and dc (sc, dc, sc, dc, etc.), while the moss stitch alternates between sc and ch (sc, ch, sc, ch, etc.).

Does the crochet seed stitch work with every yarn weight?

Absolutely! I have used it with DK yarn as well as size 7 jumbo yarn, and the stitch retains its beautiful texture regardless of the yarn weight.

Why are there so many names for just one type of stitch?

Honestly, I have no idea. It might have started as a regional naming convention. It can be confusing, but once you know they are all the same, it becomes easier to associate them with each other.
