Looking for a fun and cozy project to keep your little one extra toasty this winter? Look no further than this crochet snowman hat pattern!

    Finished crochet snowman hat pattern.

This crochet snowman hat pattern uses fuzzy yarn that creates a soft, warm texture, though it may make it a bit tricky to see your stitches, so I wouldn't recommend beginners to make this hat. But other than that, donโ€™t worry, the stitches required to make this adorable hat are simple โ€” itโ€™s primarily made from half double crochets, so you can still easily follow along.

This pattern is designed to fit a young child, like my 5-year-old son, but if you need a larger size, it's easy to adjust! Just add an extra round or two with half double crochet increases for a custom fit. For an adult size, aim for a circumference of about 20-21 inches.

Plus, if youโ€™ve got extra fuzzy yarn for crocheting, be sure to check out my mini crochet Christmas stocking pattern or my crochet Christmas tree skirt pattern for even more festive fun!

Not only will this crochet winter hat pattern make a fun project, but itโ€™ll also help your child stay warm and stylish all winter long. So grab your yarn, your hook, and letโ€™s get crocheting a snowman hat theyโ€™ll love!

    โœ๏ธ Things To Note:

    1. Crochet Fuzzy Yarn: The crochet snowman hat pattern uses fuzzy yarn, which can make it a little tricky to see your stitches. Make sure you're comfortable with basic crochet techniques like the half double crochet (HDC) and don't mind working with a bit of a challenge.
    2. Child Size: The crochet snowman hat pattern is designed to fit a young child, around 5 years old (like my son!). If you need a larger size, it's easy to adjust โ€” just add an extra round or two with HDC increases. For an adult size, aim for a circumference of 20-21 inches and measure accordingly.
    3. Stitch Visibility: While the fluffy yarn adds a fun texture, it can obscure your stitches. If youโ€™re new to working with fuzzy yarn, keep track of your stitch count and row markers to stay on track!

๐ŸตInstructions for Crochet Snowman Hat Pattern

I will show you how to crochet a snowman hat. The crochet winter hat is made in the round.

Crochet Hat Base: For a small child 5-6 years old.

Increased rounds of hdc for the crochet hat.
Finished sides of the crochet snowman hat.

Round 1: With the 8mm hook and fuzzy yarn, make a mr, ch x1 (does not count as a stitch) and hdc x10 in it. Then pull the yarn tight to close the circle and sl st to the first hdc (10).

Round 2: Ch x1, and then hdc inc in every stitch (20). Then sl st to the first hdc.

Round 3: Ch x1, and then hdc inc, hdc then repeat (30). Then sl st to the first hdc.

Round 4: Ch x1, and then hdc inc, hdc x2 then repeat (40). Then sl st to the first hdc.

Round 5-10: Ch x1, and then hdc in every stitch (40). Then sl st to the first hdc.

    Crochet Ear Muffs:

Adding earflaps to the crochet hat.
Crocheting a round of single crochet stitches using 3 strands of yarn - delft blue, light blue, and white.

Row 1: Ch x1, hdc x6, then ch x1 and turn.

Row 2: Hdc x6 and ch x1 and turn.

Row 3: Dec, hdc x2, dec. Then ch x1 and turn.

Row 4: Dec, dec. Then fasten off and weave in any ends.

Skip 14 stitches, rejoin the fuzzy yarn and do the above steps on the other side of the hat.

With the light blue, white, and delft blue yarn, make a slip knot with all 3 yarns and sc the entire edge of the hat. Then fasten off the yarn and weave in the ends.

Pointing to where to insert your yarn for the side braids.

Make 3 x 24" inch strips of the delft blue, light blue, and white. Then insert them at the bottom of the ear flap where I am pointing.

Finished braids for the crochet snowman hat.

Divide the yarns into 3 sections - 2 of each color and then braid. Secure with an extra piece of string at the bottom with a knot to keep the braids in place.

Repeat for the other side of the hat.

    Finished crochet snowman face details.

    Snowman Eyes:

Round 1: With the black yarn and the 4.5mm, make a mr and sc x6, then pull the circle tight (6).

    ๐ŸŒExpert Tips

    • Use a Stitch Marker: Since crocheting fuzzy yarn can obscure your stitches, itโ€™s easy to lose track of where you are in the round. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round, especially when working with half double crochets. This will help you stay on track and keep your shape even.
    • Tension Control: Fuzzy yarn can be tricky to work with because it hides the stitches, but donโ€™t be tempted to crochet too tight. Keep a consistent, relaxed tension to ensure your stitches are even and that the hat doesnโ€™t become too stiff.
    • Count Your Stitches: Make sure to count your stitches after every round. Fuzzy yarn can make it harder to see where each stitch is placed, so be diligent about keeping your stitch count accurate to avoid any mistakes that might cause the hat to become misshapen.

    ๐ŸงตPattern FAQs

Can I make this hat with a different type of yarn?

Yes, while this pattern is designed for crocheting fuzzy yarn, you can substitute it with another yarn type if you prefer. Just keep in mind that using a non-fuzzy yarn may change the texture and appearance of the finished hat. If youโ€™re using a thinner yarn, consider adjusting your hook size accordingly.

What if Iโ€™m having trouble seeing my stitches with the fuzzy yarn?

It can be tricky to see stitches with fuzzy yarn. One solution is to use a larger hook to create looser stitches. You can also work in a well-lit area and use a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds. If necessary, take it slow and count your stitches after every round to ensure you donโ€™t miss any.

Can I make the snowman hat without the face?

Absolutely! If you prefer a more minimalist look, you can skip the snowman face and still have a cute, cozy winter hat. You could even add a pom-pom or other fun embellishments instead.
