Yarn Choice: I made the crochet eyes pattern with acrylic yarn as it's what I had on hand but this project can be completed with any type of yarn. Cotton, acrylic, and chunky yarn are the yarns I would highly suggest though. If you use chunky yarn it will be quite enormous.
Finished Size: The finished size of the crochet eyeball plush is about 3 inches in diameter using a 5mm hook size, excluding the nerve.
Color Options: I made the eye blue, but you can change the color to any color.
Instructions
For the crochet eyes pattern we will be working in rounds.
Eyeballs:
Round 1: Using black yarn, make a MR and make sc x6 in the circle. If you find it difficult making a magic ring you can chain 2 and then crochet sc x6 in the second chain from the hook. (6)
Round 2: Inc in every sc. (12)
Round 3: Switch color of yarn to blue (or whatever color you would like the eye color to be), inc, sc, inc, sc and repeat until end of round (18)
Round 4: Inc, sc x2, inc, sc x2 and repeat until end of round (24)
Round 5: Switch color of yarn to white. Inc, sc x3, inc, sc x3 and repeat until end of round (30)
Round 6: Inc, sc x4, inc, sc x4 and repeat until end of round (36)
Round 7-12: Sc in every stitch. (36)
Round 13: Dec, sc x4, repeat for the entire round (30)
Round 14: Dec, sc x3, repeat for the entire round (24)
Round 15: Dec, sc x2, repeat for the entire round (18) Stuff eyeball if you haven’t already yet.
Round 16: Dec, sc, repeat for the entire round (12)
Round 17: Dec, repeat for the entire round (6). Fasten off and sew the eyeball closed.
Nerve:
Attach red yarn to the back of the eyeball and make 11 chains. Then in the second chain from the hook make a sc. Inc,sc for the entire chain until you get to the end near the eyeball. Make a sc into the eyeball attaching it again to the white ball part. Then surface crochet 3-6 sc outward from the center. After you surface crochet the amount you like fasten off and leave a tail for embroidering the little veins in the eye.
After that, reattach the yarn to the bottom of the main nerve at the bottom and repeat the 3-6 surface crochets. Fasten off and leave a tail for embroidering the veins.
You will repeat this step 6 more times.
Once all 8 surface crochet lines are done, grab your tapestry needle and embroider lines for the smaller veins in the eye.
Weave in all the loose ends and your eye is done!
If you would like to have the split yarn at the end of the eye nerve, weave one of the tail ends of the red yarn to the very end tip of the nerve and pull it through. Make sure the yarn is about 2-3 inches. Then unwind the yarn and leave it frayed.
You can also embroider a white highlight on the front of the eye for some added details!
And there you have it! Your very own crochet eye! You can make these pretty fast so you can make a whole bowl full of crochet eyes, perfect for Halloween treats!
