Size Adjustments: This pattern is written for an adult large size, but it can be easily adjusted to fit different head sizes. To do this, simply add or subtract rows in the main body of the hat to achieve your desired fit. Be sure to measure as you go to ensure a comfortable fit!
Stitching Details: The ribbed brim is created using a single crochet in the back loop, which gives it a stretchy, textured look. The main body of the hat features the granny diamond stitch, a classic crochet technique that adds a beautiful, intricate pattern to the design. If you’re new to this stitch, take your time to familiarize yourself with it for the best results.
Yarn & Color Options: You can choose any yarn you like, but I recommend a medium-weight yarn (like worsted weight) for the best structure and warmth. The color options are limitless! You can use solid colors for a sleek look or mix and match different shades to create your own unique style.
Instructions
This pattern is made in rows and in the round.
Brim:
Row 1: Using black yarn, ch 11, sc in second ch from hook and continue to make sc across the chain. Then ch x1 and turn (10)
Row 2: Sc in blo for every stitch in this row. Then ch x1 and turn (10).
Row 3-78: Repeat row 2 (10). Adjust the amount of rows if needed. You want the ribbing to be smaller, make sure the rows made are divisible by 3.
Sl st or sc the two ends together to form a cuff. Begin the next round by crocheting along the edge of the cuff to start the hand portion of the glove.
Flip the brim right side out, then sc around the top in black (78).
Base of the Hat:
Round 1: With white yarn, join the yarn anywhere in the sc on the brim and ch x3. Then dc x2 in the same stitch.
Skip 2 sc stitches and dc x3 in the 3rd stitch. Repeat for the rest of the round, then sl st to the beginning chains.
Round 2: Ch x2 and dc x2 into the ch space. When making the last dc, yarn over with blue and go through the last 2 loops on the hook to switch colors.
Dc x3 in blue, then switch to white like you did above. Repeat for the rest of the round. Sl st to the starting chains but make sure the color on your hook is blue.
Round 3: Make blue dc clusters in the gaps between the clusters in the lower round. Sl st to the beginning chains and switch the color to white.
Round 4: Ch x2 and dc x2 in the gap. Then switch to blue. Make sure the blue stitches are above the blue stitches from 2 rows below. This completes the diamond pattern. Repeat alternating the white and blue clusters.
Round 5-12: Repeat the above rounds by alternating either a solid blue or white round and a round that alternates the color every cluster.
Round 13: With the white yarn, ch x2 and dc in the first gap. Then dc x2 in every gap space.
Round 14: Make a sc in every gap space. Then fasten off and leave a long tail for cinching the hat shut.
With a needle, weave the yarn tail in out of the sc stitches and pull tight to close the hat. Tie the yarn and weave in any ends.
Optional: Add a homemade or purchased pom pom to the top.
I hope you had fun creating your beautiful crochet granny stitch hat and are ready to wear it throughout the cozy fall and winter months!
