Crochet Granny Ripple Blanket Pattern
The crochet granny ripple blanket pattern is a perfect blanket pattern for beginners. It works up quickly, uses basic crochet stitches, and looks great in any colorway!
Materials
- 6-7 skeins Red Heart Roll With It Melange Yarn - Showtime
- 5.5 mm hook
- Tapestry needle
Abbreviations (US terms)
- Chains - ch
- Double crochet - dc
Notes
- Stitches: the only stitches you need to know for this granny ripple crochet pattern are chains and double crochet - that's it. Nothing fancy. If you are new to the granny stitch my Beginner Crochet Granny Square Patterns is a good place to start - it is just in the rounds instead of rows.
- Blanket Size: This pattern makes a throw size blanket, to make a larger blanket adjust the starting chain by multiples of 18.
- Border: I use tassels for the border, but if you want a different border finish, you can do a Crochet Pom Pom Border for an alternative but cute look!
Instructions
Granny Ripple Crochet Stitch:
- Ch x216.
- Row 1: Dc x3 into the 5th ch from the hook.
- Skip 2 chs, dc x3 into the next ch. Skip 2 chains. *Peak: (Dc x3, ch x2, dc x3) to the next stitch.
- Skip 2 chs, dc x3 into the next ch, skip 2 chs, dc x3 into the next ch. Valley: Skip 5 chs, dc x3 into the next ch, skip 2 chs, dc x3 into the next ch, skip 2 chs.
- Repeat from * until the rest of the row, you should have 1 chain left. Dc into the last ch.
- Ch x3 and turn.
- Row 2: Skip the 3 dc stitches and dc x3 into the gap between clusters, then skip 3 dc stitches and dc x3 into the next gap.
- *In the ch-2 space, which is the peak space, (dc x3, ch x2, dc x3). Skip the 3 dc stitches and dc x3 into the gap between clusters, then skip 3 dc stitches and dc x3 into the next gap. Skip the next cluster, the valley space and the next cluster.
- Dc x3 into the next gap, skip the next cluster, dc x3 into the next gap.
- Repeat from * for the rest of the row.
- Until you reach the last 3 stitches and the chains at the end of the row. Here you will skip the 3 dc stitches and make a dc into the top of the chs at the very end of the row.
- Then ch x3 and turn.
- Repeat row 2 until your blanket is 54 inches in length (for a throw blanket size).
- OPTIONAL: Last minute I decided to do a row of dc stitches at the top and bottom of the blanket. To do this ch x3, then dc into the tops of all the stitches. When I got to a peak I did (dc x2, ch x2, dc x2), for a valley I skipped the middle 2 stitches.
How to Make Tassels from Yarn:
- You will make a tassel for every peak, for the blanket I needed 25.
- You will also need something 4-5 inches in length to wrap yarn around. It can be anything just make sure its sturdy.
- Wrap your yarn 30 times, then carefully cut the end of the yarn so its no longer attached to a skein.
- Cut a 12-inch piece of yarn and skip it under one side of the wrapped yarn Move it to the top.
- Tie the yarn tightly.
- Slip the yarn CAREFULLY off of whatever you had the yarn wrapped on. Lay it flat on the table.
- Cut a 12-inch piece of string and lay it perpendicular to the tassel. You want to place the yarn roughly an inch and a half down from the top.
- Tie the yarn to create bulb at the top of the yarn. Make sure it is secured well.
- Cut the bottom of the tassel soit is no longer loops. Trim if needed.
- Tie the tassels to the peaks of the crochet blanket, then weave in the yarn ends to secure it further.
- And the crochet granny ripple blanket pattern is done!
