Looking for a crochet coin purse pattern to carry your loose change? Or maybe you need a cute little bag to hold your favorite rocks, trinkets, and crystals! Whatever the case, my crochet coin bag is sure to do the trick.
Skill Level: This pattern is beginner-friendly but assumes basic knowledge of granny squares and joining techniques. If you're new to crochet, you might want to practice making a few of the granny squares before using it in the pattern.
Gauge isn't critical, but try to keep your squares consistent in size for the cleanest finish when joining.
Lining: You do not have to line the bag with fabric, but just be aware that if your stitches are too loose and have large holes in between, coins can slip out of the bag, in which case then I would recommend lining the bag.
Instructions
For this crochet coin purse pattern, we will be working in rounds.
Crochet Daisy Granny Square:
Make x2.
Round 1: Using the yellow yarn, make a magic ring, then ch x3 (this counts as a dc) and dc x15 into the ring. Then sl st to the top of the chains that you made at the beginning to close the round (16). Fasten off the yellow yarn and join the white in any stitch.
Round 2: With the white yarn, ch x2 and in the same stitch make a modified puff stitch. To make a puff stitch you will yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over again and pull up a loop (you have 3 loops on your hook).
Now yarn over, insert the hook into the same stitch, yarn over again and pull up a loop (you have 5 loops on your hook). You can now yarn over and pull through all 5 loops. Then make a chain.
*In the next stitch make a puff stitch like before but repeat the yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, step 1 more time so you have 7 loops on the hook. Then yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook. Ch x1.*
Repeat from *. Sl st to the first puff stitch to close the round (16 puffs + 16 ch). Fasten off the white yarn and join the light sage yarn in any ch x1 space.
Round 3: Now we will square off the granny square using the light sage green yarn.
Ch x2 and dc into the ch space. In the next ch space hdc x3. In the following ch spaces complete the following: sc x3, hdc x3,
*dc x2 + ch x2 + dc x2 (this is a corner), hdc x3, sc x3, hdc x3*
Repeat from * 2 more times. When you get to the half corner that was done in the beginning of the round, go ahead and dc x2 and ch x2 into that corner then sl st to the top of the first ch x2 (which acts as a double crochet). Then fasten off the green yarn and make the second daisy granny square.
Building the Crochet Coin Purse:
Sew the squares together by sewing 3 sides of the square together. I do this by whip stitching the tops of the stitches from both squares together. Make sure you leave a side open for the top of the bag.
Once the bag is sewn together we are ready to begin crocheting the top of the coin purse.
Round 1: Join the green yarn to the top of the bag (anywhere is fine), then ch x2. Dc in the next stitch. Continue making dc stitches in every top stitch of the bag. When you get to the end of the round, sl st to the ch x2 at the beginning. I ended up having 32 dc stitches for the top because I also made dc stitches where I sewed the 2 squares together. If you don’t have the same number of dc stitches as me - that is totally fine.
Round 2: This is the round we will make spaces for the drawstring. Ch x1 and then make a hdc in the next stitch. *Ch x1 and skip the next stitch, then make a hdc in the following stitch. Repeat from* and when you get to the end of the round make a sl st to the first hdc. If you want you can use more hdc in between the skipped stitches. Also if it doesn’t divide evenly, that is ok, this is just the round to put the drawstring in so it won’t be noticeable anyways.
Round 3: Ch x2 then in the next stitch make a dc. Dc in each hdc and ch space for this round. Then sl st to the ch x2 in the beginning. Because round 1 had 32 stitches in it for me, I ended up with 32 stitches in this round. Fasten off and weave in any ends.
Crochet Drawstring:
With white yarn, ch x32 and fasten off. Weave it through the top of the coin purse in the drawstring round (round 2), then tie the ends together and weave in the ends to the drawstring so it becomes a continuous loop.
Now you are all done making the crochet coin purse pattern! Whether you styled the crochet flower as a daisy, a sunflower, or another crochet flower this versatile and fun crochet drawstring coin bag pattern is sure to become a favorite in your handmade collection.
