Beginner Crochet Hexagon Patterns
Making hexagons in crochet can seem daunting, but with my beginner crochet hexagon patterns you'll be making hexagons like a pro in no time. I'll show you how to make the granny hexagon, the solid hexagon, and the no-holes hexagon.
Materials
- Yarn
- Hook size that matches
- Tapestry needle
Abbreviations (US terms)
- Magic ring - mr
- Chains - ch
- Double crochet - dc
- Triple crochet - tr (for the no holes granny square)
- Increase - inc
- Slip stitch - sl st
Notes
- Double Crochet: These hexagons use double crochet. Once you get used to making them in double crochet you can experiment with other stitches, like the Moss Stitch Granny Square Pattern, but turned into a hexagon!
- Yarn: Yarn type can be almost anything for crochet hexagon patterns - smooth, fuzzy, thin, thick etc. If you are a beginner, I suggest going with a smooth yarn so you can see your stitches.
- Swatch: I only go a few rounds for these hexagon crochet patterns, but if you follow the basic instructions, you can do as many rounds as you like!
Instructions
Granny Hexagon Crochet Pattern:
- Round 1: With color A, make a magic ring and then ch x3 (counts as a dc) and dc into the mr.
- Then ch x2.
- *Dc x2 into the mr, then ch x2 again. Repeat from * 4 more times (6 dc groups and chain groups should be present).
- Make a sl st to the beginning chains, and fasten off color A. Pull the ring tight.
- Round 2: Join color B in any ch-2 space from the round before. Ch x3, then make a dc, ch x2, and dc x2 into that corner space.
- *Dc x2, ch x2, dc x2 into the next corner space and repeat from * 4 more times.
- Then sl st to the beginning chains and fasten off the yarn.
- Round 3: Join color C in any ch-2 corner space from the round below. Ch x3, then dc, ch x2, and dc x2 into that corner space.
- *Then dc x2 in the next space between the 2 corner clusters from the round below. Then in the corner space - dc x2, ch x2 and dc x2.
- Repeat from * 4 more times, then dc x2 in that last space before the first corner. Then sl st to the beginning chains and fasten off.
- Round 4: Join color D in any ch-2 corner space from the round below. At this point you want to repeat round 3, but add an extra cluster of 2 dc on the side. At the end, sl st to the beginning chains and fasten off.
- And now you know how to crochet a classic and easy crochet granny hexagon.
Solid Hexagon Crochet Pattern:
- Round 1: Make a mr and then ch x3 (counts as a dc) and dc into the mr.
- Then ch x2.
- *Dc x2 into the mr, then ch x2 again. Repeat from * 4 more times (6 dc groups and chain groups should be present).
- Make a sl st to the beginning chains, and pull the ring tight.
- Round 2: Ch x3, dc into the tops of the dc stitches, and in the ch-2 corners of the hexagon you want to (dc, ch x2, dc).
- You will repeat this for the rest of the round. Sl st to the beginning chains.
- Round 3 and onwards: You will basically repeat round 2. Ch x3, dc into the tops of all previous stitches (dc, ch x2, dc) into the corners.
- And now you know how to crochet a solid crochet granny hexagon.
No-Holes Hexagon Crochet Pattern:
- Round 1: Make a mr and then ch x3 (counts as a dc) and tr into the mr.
- *Dc, tr into the mr. Then repeat 4 more times.
- Make a sl st to the beginning chains, and pull the ring tight.
- Round 2: Ch x3, dc into the sl st where you made the chains.
- *(Dc, tr, dc) into the next stitch (should be a tr from the previous round). Dc inc into the next stitch. Then repeat from * 4 more times. Make the last corner and sl st to the beginning chains.
- Round 3 and onwards: Ch x3, dc into every dc stitch from the round below. When you get to the tr stitch (the corner), make (dc, tr, dc). Repeat for the rest of the round, sl st to the beginning chains.
